Latest News on Hate Crimes Legislation
Vote
Could Come as Early as Thursday, October 8
Call the
Armed Services Committee Members and/or Fax Congress
From the Family Research Council:
Hate Crimes -- House and Senate Conferees have planned to meet sometime
today (Wednesday, October 7) to reconcile differences between the House
and Senate versions of the fiscal 2010 Defense Authorization bill.
Conferees have struggled over whether to keep a Senate Hate Crimes
amendment that will make acts of violence against people because of their
" sexual orientation" and "gender identity" subject to federal
investigation, prosecution and imprisonment. In 2007, conferees dropped a
similar provision, fearing it might jeopardize final action on the bill.
Last night, the U.S. House defeated 178 to 234 a motion to instruct House
conferees to remove the hate crimes amendment from the Defense bill. A
final House vote on the conference report is expected Thursday and a
Senate vote next week. While no one is in favor of violent acts against
anyone in a civil society, we discern that this legislation will become a
gateway to criminalizing public opposition to homosexual, bi-sexual, and
transvestite behavior.

Rules for Calling:
Always be polite.
When they answer simply ask to leave a
comment for the Congressman or Senator.
Ask them to drop Senator Leahy's Hate
Crimes Amendment from the 2010 Defense Authorization Bill.
If they ask for a reason or try to argue,
there are many. Some responses might include:
Let the bill stand on its own and be
voted on rather than attaching to a bill that it has nothing to do
with.
All crimes should be punished equally,
regardless of race, color or gender.
This bill violates First Amendment (free
speech). Every nation or state where it has been enacted has resulted
in the arrest of Christians for preaching the Bible.
This bill violates the Fourteenth
Amendment (creating special classes of protection).
If you are calling a Representative or
Senator in another State and they ask where you are calling from, don't
lie. Simply say, "I'm calling
from ________ but as a Citizen of the United States the
Senator/Representatives vote on this bill will directly affect me,
therefore I am asking him/her to oppose Senator Leahy's Hate Crime
Amendment."
Thank them for their time.
Remember, our Founding Fathers signed
their death warrants when they added their names to the Declaration of
Independence pledging to one another their lives, fortunes and sacred
honor. After they gave so much so that we could enjoy Christian Liberty
is it too much to ask of us to spend $19 for a fax or spend twenty minutes
making phone calls to keep it?
*********************************************************************************************************************** ** Thorough Presentation and Action Items by Attorney Mat Staver ** List of Senators and how they Voted
OVERVIEW The Defense Bill/Hate Crimes Bill has not passed yet, but Thursday was not good as a cloture vote was taken, thus ending the discussion. The Bill will next be voted on Monday or Tuesday, so we still have slight hope. Sen. Brownback added an amendment which seeks to guaranty First Amendment rights for Christians, so that is good, but still there is this question: Since there is no rash of hate crimes being committed, and since all crimes already are punished with EQUAL justice, why is it so important for the liberals to push this through? History shows that every state or nation that has passed Hate Crimes has used it to suppress Christian thought and speech. I believe this bill is like opening Pandora's Box. For example, the Revenue Act of 1913 established a federal income tax rate of 1%. Now look at us. If they succeed with this, they will push for ENDA, eliminate "Don't Ask, Don't Tell", and overall all state DOMA laws, and by that time the Speech and Thought protections will be rolled away. We still need to act by calling and faxing today and on Monday. If nothing else, learn from this. With a liberal supermajority in both houses and the most liberal President in American history, they thought this would sail through 2 months ago. Instead they have had a fistfight and ultimately used underhanded procedural tactics to slide it through. We must keep active on every measure including Sotomayor and keep score of these votes and VOTE THE BUMS OUT in 16 months.
FROM ATTORNEY MAT STAVER
AND LIBERTY COUNSEL:
Late Thursday night, the Senate
voted 63-28 to end discussion on 2009's version of the Hate Crimes bill
and to make it an amendment to the Defense Authorization bill.
HOW THEY VOTED
_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Then the goal was the sneak this unnecessary legislation through as an amendment to an unrelated bill in mid-June. Likewise, thanks to the awareness and reaction by those that hold the Constitution dear, that plan was thwarted and hearing was held last Thursday in the Senate Judiciary Committee. According to Gordon Klingenshmitt (www.prayinjesusname.org): · Only 2 conservative testimonies were permitted at the hearings, versus 4 pro-gay liberals.
· Attorney General Eric Holder linked the bill to illegal immigrant rights, but "national origin" is already protected by 1994 law: 75% of Hispanics oppose gay marriage. Holder also admitted Christian pastors wouldn't be protected if assaulted by violent homosexuals.
According to attorney Mat Staver with Liberty Counsel: Holder made his "party line" case -- that the federal government needs more sweeping prosecutorial powers to protect citizens from so-called Hate Crimes. But the evidence just doesn't support the Attorney General's conclusion! In fact, many of those speaking at the hearing strongly rejected Holder's claims. For example: Senator Jeff Sessions called the bill a "double standard of justice" while Sen. Orrin Hatch added there is "little evidence" of any need for the bill. In addition, an official with the U.S. Civil Rights Commission delivered a penetrating analysis of why this bill is bad for our Nation's legal system, strongly urging it be rejected. Liberty Counsel delivered to the Judiciary Committee a petition opposing this hate crimes bill with over 100,000 signatures! In addition to the petition numbering 100,000 strong, “Pray in Jesus Name” delivered over 125,000 faxes to the United States Senate, and Janet Porter (Faith 2 Action) and Joseph Farah (World Net Daily) organized an effort to deliver over 700,000 FedEx letters to the Senate all opposing the Hate Crimes Legislation. Thank you for participating in these efforts and thank you most of all for your phone calls to the Senate over these past few weeks. YOUR VOICE IS BEING HEARD AND YOU ARE MAKING A DIFFERENCE. Remember Christians, we have a special privilege in America that we must protect. We do not have a King or oligarchy. The power in America is “We the people…” Whether it be the President, a Senator or House Member, their job is not to lord over the people, but they WORK FOR the people of the United States. They swear an oath to defend and uphold the Constitution. Just as any employer, it is our job to keep an eye on them, hold them accountable, make sure they are doing their job well and if not, to fire them. The Hate Crimes Bill is expected to be voted on in committed sometime in mid-July. Keep your eyes and ears open and be ready to react!!
Psalm 33:12 –
“Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord.”
